Some 1500 laboratory professionals, clinicians, program managers, epidemiologists, researchers, students, and policy makers will convene in Cape Town, South Africa from December 1-7, 2012 for the First International Conference of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM).
The objective of this meeting is to convene healthcare professionals and policy makers from Africa and around the world to present and discuss the latest developments and initiatives for strengthening national laboratory health systems and networks, diagnostics, and their impact on healthcare delivery and disease surveillance.

The conference will address a wide range of laboratory-related subject areas with particular emphasis on: translation of laboratory knowledge, practices, and technologies into clinical care; the interface of laboratory with medical science; laboratory-based epidemiology; and laboratory investigations and evidence-based effectiveness in real world settings.
[b]Specifically, the conference will provide a forum for:[/b][list]
[*]Problem-solving to improve access to, regulation of, and policy regarding quality point of care laboratory diagnostics for quality health care in Africa and elsewhere.
[*]Discussing ways to strengthen laboratory-based surveillance, biosafety, and biosecurity, and to reduce antimicrobial resistance.
[*]Prioritizing and enhancing mobilization and utilization of resources for local capacity.
[*]Operationalizing laboratory research to meet evolving disease needs in the 21st century.
[*]Exchanging knowledge, skills, and best practices to improve access to high quality laboratory services.
[*]Sharing experiences on establishing functional laboratory networks for disease-specific needs and for multiple diseases.

ASLM2012 will feature plenary sessions, oral and poster presentations, and symposia. The official languages of the meeting are English, French, and Portuguese and simultaneous translation will be available during the plenary sessions.
[b]At the completion of this meeting, participants should be able to:[/b][list=1]
[*]Assess their individual efforts in light of the most current knowledge and information about laboratory medicine.
[*]Incorporate best practices emerging from laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological research and implementation science into their professional endeavours.

As part of the continuing Modular Education Programme in Toxicological Pathology the BSTP is organising a module in Cambridge on the [b]Respiratory System [/b]from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th December 2012.
[b]This module is now open to both members and non-members of the BSTP.[/b]
Please note that the late booking fee will apply after 1st October 2012 and that registration for this module will close on Thursday [b]1st November 2012[/b].
The main aim of the modules is to provide a comprehensive basic education in the field of toxicological pathology and this module - [b]Module 10[/b] covers the [b]Respiratory System[/b].
[b]Who should attend[/b] - the modules are intended for participants who have had formal undergraduate training in pathology and are actively working in the field. Some of the content of the module will also be new to pathologists who have been working for many years and experienced pathologists can also benefit from an update.
[b]The Royal College of Pathologists have awarded 23 CPD credits for full attendance at this module.[/b]

The conference programme will include plenary speakers delivering the John Matthews Memorial and Boris Balinsky Lectures, as well as oral and poster presentations delivered along two parallel sessions, viz. Materials Sciences and Life Sciences. Wherever possible, presenters will be identified to deliver Keynote Address presentations at the beginning of particular themes in each discipline. Oral presentations will be allocated 15 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion.

Description: This three-day course will provide the attendee with a multidisciplinary review of standard of care management practices and state of the art advances in care of the patient with cutaneous melanoma. The first day will focus on epidemiology, prevention, pathology, genetic syndromes, advances in genomics, imaging and medical and surgical treatment in association with melanoma. The last two days are an in-depth immersion into Dermoscopy for imaging of melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin lesions, including three breakout sessions. Participants will develop practical skills that will enable them to be more comfortable approaching patients with atypical skin lesions. This dermoscopy section is primarily targeted to clinicians, but educators and residents will find it valuable as a springboard to develop Dermoscopy training programs. College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Description: This symposium is specifically designed to update the practicing dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons and other health professionals on the timeliest advances in Medical and Surgical Dermatology. New information about psoriasis, rosacea, skin cancer, dermatopathology, eczema, infectious diseases, contact dermatitis; HIV Dermatology; and numerous cosmetic procedures will be presented. Clinical pearls about topical therapy, simple explanations of complicated dermatopathologic diagnoses, and discussion pertaining to educationally valuable cases are among the many subjects which will be covered in this year’s program. Live Patient Demonstrations and Workshops with newly-approved cosmetic devices will also be featured. We will have an equal emphasis on the medical as well as the surgical dermatology. Participants will benefit from the close-circuit televising system which will enable them to observe cosmetic techniques while are being administrated by the world-renowned experts. The education which will be disseminated during the course of the program will enable participants to bridge their professional gaps so they could meet the educational needs which exist in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology, and dermatopathology. Participants will be able to earn CME/AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).
