Alopecia, psoriatic

Operations Pathhub

Case 1460  28.1.16 (A. Bakshi)  F 53  scaling, erythema, hair loss

Preserved follicular units with hardly any inflammation, argues against LPP. Sebaceous gland atrophy is a typical feature of psoriatic alopecia. Basophilic remnants of sebaceous glands surrounding follicles, a rather consistent feature and a good clue to the diagnosis.   Marked telogen shift and surface epidermal changes complete the picture.

Case 2387  (R. Carr) M 65 alopecia

Shows striking atrophy of sebaceous glands.

Ref: Am J Dermatopathol 2008: 30: 93-100

Case 3046  (S. Taibjee)  67F punch biopsy vertex of scalp: hairloss ?lupus ?eczema ?psoriasis ?androgenetic alopecia

F 67 scalp biopsy for hair loss

Loss/atrophy of sebaceous glands with widespread basophilic glandular remnants.  No significant scarring.  Some miniturisation, so possibly concomitant androgenetic alopecia.
