Molecular pathology offers unparalleled opportunities for quick screening for disease-associated mutations and pharmacogenetic predictors of response to specific therapies. This course will provide an in-depth introduction to the new world of molecular pathology testing, including the tools for screening molecular variables and the relevance of those variables to patient care.

The expert faculty will use cases to introduce molecular concepts and terminology, describe the molecular workup, and discuss the reporting of molecular tests. You’ll hear about molecular subsets and HER2 testing guidelines for breast carcinoma, the molecular basis of hemochromatosis, molecular and cytogenetic testing in lymphomas and leukemias, and many other cutting-edge topics.

You’ll also get advice about setting up a molecular lab and bringing in new tests, which tests to send out, validating in-lab assays, and achieving compliance in an evolving regulatory environment. Plus, you’ll learn how to integrate molecular pathology data into your diagnostic process and report that data so that clinicians can understand the significance.

Following this course, you will be able to:

Integrate concepts, terminology, indications, and applications of molecular pathology into your practice.

Use molecular pathology tests to improve the accuracy of your morphologic diagnosis.

Assess differences in disease pathogenesis based on molecular pathology test results.

Identify molecular subsets relevant to disease natural history and patient response to customized therapies.

Determine which tests to bring in or send out.

Formulate a plan to validate new in-lab assays.

Advise treating clinicians regarding the significance of molecular test results

Medical decision support is increasingly important. It has spawned research in the areas of standardization, semantic interoperability, formalization of knowledge, knowledge discovery and guidelines. It also led to the development of decision support systems that can be interfaced with clinical information systems. It is very important that the quality of these systems is carefully evaluated. Apart from being used by decision support systems the current medical knowledge also has to be managed so that it is easily accessible by physicians and nurses.

In short, this conference is about an important topic and it is worthwhile to contribute. Several EFMI Working Groups are directly involved in the conference programme. Two excellent keynote speakers, Jan van Bemmel and Marion Ball, will present their ideas about the conference topic.
Not only the topic of the conference is inviting, the same is true for the venue of the conference: Prague. This beautiful city provides an excellent ambiance for organizing a conference, especially in spring time!

The conference will consist of two streams: the scientific stream is about the results of scientific investigations related to the topic; the application stream will be about experiences with applications and their evaluation. In the application stream there is room for presentations by the industry. They will be invited to provide insight in their products.

Complete information about the various types of contributions is available in the "Call for contributions". Full papers, posters and short communications are welcomed. All submissions will be reviewed by domain experts. Full papers have to be submitted before October 15, 2012, posters and short communications before November 15th, 2012. All accepted submissions will be available in the conference CD-ROM and EFMI website. Scientific contributions meeting the requirements will be published by IOS Press and indexed in Medline. Selected contributions of the conference will be published in a special issue of the European Journal of Biomedical Informatics, an official journal of the EFMI.

We invite you to come to Prague as a presenter, delegate or exhibitor and enjoy in addition to the conference Prague’s beautiful environment.

[background=transparent]The ESP started with “Masterclasses” during the last years. The concept is to have a one day course in the ESP office in Brussels for up to 30 attendees, pathologists or residents. I prepared one such course with all material but it could not be presented last year as it was planned, because of the low interest. I still believe that it will be possible to give this course this year, if we announce it a little bit better. The course will be focused on radiological - pathological correlation of breast lesions and will contain the best of Falun.[/background]

[background=transparent][background=transparent]Thus, I would like to ask You to consider sending out this information to people interested in breast pathology and possibly, send one or two of Your colleagues to this course. Registration is simple; just write a mail to admin@esp-pathology.org. Registration fee 100 EUR, also including our last product, a 3D breast booklet.[/background][/background]
